Now, as reported in XDA, a developer called Tim Schneeberger has posted images and details of the new earbuds Samsung is launching, Samsung Galaxy Buds 2.
Schneeberger found information on Samsung’s update server, with plenty of detail and images in more colors than were seen before.
MORE FOR YOU
A previous leak has shown us black, white and purple headphones—which already puts Samsung two steps ahead of Apple in the color stakes as AirPods Pro only come in white—but the new information goes two better. Now, we can see Galaxy Buds 2 in yellow and a gray/green shade that’s almost khaki.
Also discovered was a feature that hasn’t been seen before in previous leaks, or indeed in other headphones. It’s no surprise that the headphones will have noise-cancelling and it’s the feature that puts them head to head with Apple AirPods Pro or the newest buds from Apple’s other brand, Beats Studio Buds.
But what wasn’t expected was the option to enable “ANC with one earbud”. That’s new and very different from what’s available elsewhere.
This seems likely to be used for calls rather than listening to music, as it would offer better call quality. It seems rather less likely that it would be so you could have noise-cancelling active on one earbud and off on the other as that would lead to a rather strange audio effect, I’d say.
This option is grayed out, Schneeberger says, at the moment.
Additionally, there’s a more granular level of control coming. Samsung has offered single-, double- and triple-tap controls on previous earbuds, along with touch-and-hold actions. Previously, you could only enable or disable these actions as one group but now you can pick actions individually.
Other changes include a lack of adjustment to ANC which previously had high/low options on the pricier Galaxy Buds Pro. So, basically, ANC will be just on or off, it seems.
There’s also no indication of 360-degree audio. Well, Samsung needs to keep some features exclusive to its Pro model.
Like AirPods Pro, these earbuds come with multiple silicone tips to ensure the best fit, and there are features like Find My Earbuds to locate missing items.
We’ll find out more at the event expected on August 11. I mean, that’s if there really is any more to find out at this stage other than price. The recent Amazon leak said the Galaxy Watch4 would be available on August 27, so my guess is the earbuds would be out then, too.
It’ll still be a big event, mind, with two new phones (Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3), four versions of smartwatch (Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic each in two sizes) and these earbuds all expected.
