Walgreens Completes $6.5B Sale Of European Distribution Business To AmerisourceBergen

The large drug wholesaler AmerisourceBergen completed its acquisition of the majority of Walgreens Boots Alliance’s “Alliance Healthcare” wholesale distribution business for $6.5 billion, the companies announced Wednesday.

The closure of such a deal ends speculation that Walgreens would spend billions of dollars buying the remaining stake in AmerisourceBergen that the drugstore giant doesn’t already own. Walgreens’ Alliance Healthcare is one of the largest wholesalers in Europe, supplying more than 115,000 pharmacies, doctors and health centers in 13 countries.

Walgreens said it will use sale proceeds to “pay down debt and boost strategic healthcare investments,” including the drugstore chain’s investment in primary care provider VillageMD, which opening more than 600 “Village Medical at Walgreens primary care clinics.”

“Completion of this transaction represents a significant step forward in our transformation and will fuel investments to grow WBA’s core retail pharmacy and healthcare businesses,” Walgreens Boots Alliance chief executive Rosalind Brewer said. “Through these and other investments, WBA looks to bring even more innovative healthcare offerings to our customers and patients, as we further accelerate our strategic priorities.”
